Sewerflies

Sewerflies are less well known to us. We do not come into contact with them very much. These insects are only a few millimetres big and remarkably hairy on their wings. Their colour often varies from dark to light grey. As their name suggests, they live mainly in our sewers. Sewerflies like a humid and cold environment. Their larvae are mainly found in sewage treatment beds. Sewerflies are also found in the water pipes of our homes. This is certainly the case if they are defective or if they are not cleaned regularly. In that case, there is often sludge in the pipes which causes them to become clogged up. Sewage flies can also be found near damp plant containers and in so-called pupa plants.

Haired wings larger than body

Sewerflies are easily recognisable by their rough hairy wings. They are even bigger than their body. Sewerflies, also called moth mosquitoes, are only five millimetres big. Their colour varies from dark to light grey and even yellow. They also have hairy feelers on their heads. Larvae of sewerflies have no legs and eyes. They only survive in a humid environment. The larvae of these flies are up to nine millimetres long. These flies are not exactly the best kites. They can even be blown away by the wind. During the day, they often remain motionless, with their wings like roof tiles on top of each other. From a distance they can be compared to a small, dusty and dark grey triangle. In the evening and especially at night they are most active. Because these sewerflies are so small we often only recognise them when it is too late. They don’t just stay on walls, but just as well in all kinds of cracks and crevices.

Rollies in the house

Sewerflies therefore prefer to live in our sewers. Sometimes they also occur in our homes. Do you have sewerflies in your home? Then it is best to discover them in the evening. Rotting organic material plants, leaves and fruit are their favourite food. During the day, they rest in the shade on walls and walls. You can also find them in the immediate vicinity of the plumbing and sanitary pipes. Septic tanks, drains, rain pipes, waste water under flower boxes, in showers, washbasins, in stagnant water from damaged pipes and crawler basements are their favourite places to stay. On average, a female sewer fly lays no less than 200 eggs a day. The flies appear after just two days and do not grow older than three weeks. The female sewer fly can then lay about 2800 eggs. Causing sewerflies

Sewer flies are often the result of a defect in the sewer system, pipes or ducts. Fractures in the water pipe often cause dirty and polluted water. And it is precisely there that sewerflies immediately feel at home. Dirty water and sand leave behind a dirty layer of silt. This silt layer forms the ideal breeding ground for the newly born larvae. They grow there at lightning speed to become sewerflies. Because sewerflies are so small, it is difficult to track them. They hide easily on walls and walls but just as well in cracks and holes. Especially in the evening and at night they look for food. Fungi and disease-transmitting bacteria are their favourite food.
